Prospects for P2P energy trading in the UK solar industry
The increasing prevalence of variable renewable generation in the UK presents both challenges and opportunities. The necessity of the grid to become smarter and more flexible to adapt to this new era has led to the emergence of new and innovative business models, including deployment of energy storage to provide frequency response to the grid, virtual power plants, and the use of flexibility to relieve grid constraints in lieu of costly new infrastructure.
Among the most exciting new technologies to enable the smart, flexible energy system transition are distributed ledger technologies (DLT) and Peer to Peer (P2P) trading, the latter of which is explored in this report.
