Why the UK Needs Large-Scale Solar

Highlights from Solar Energy UK’s Chief Executive on Times Radio

As the government announces major new investments in nuclear, solar power remains a crucial part of the UK’s clean energy future. In an interview with Times Radio on 12 June, our Chief Executive Chris Hewett made a clear and compelling case for expanding solar, not just on rooftops, but also across the landscape through large-scale installations.

🎙️ “Solar is the cheapest form of electricity generation in this country… It’s homegrown, clean, and essential to energy security.” — Chris Hewett

While rooftop solar continues to grow at record rates, Chris highlighted that large-scale solar farms are essential for powering the grid and reducing bills across the board, especially for those who can’t install solar panels at home.

He also addressed concerns from rural communities, emphasising that:

  • Good solar developers engage early with residents.
  • Solar farms can financially support struggling farms and rural economies.
  • Most locals either support projects or have no strong opposition.
  • Batteries are becoming increasingly effective in balancing solar’s intermittency — as seen in California and Australia.

With a government roadmap for solar expected soon, the industry is ready to step up.

The future is solar-powered and it must include large-scale projects if we’re serious about delivering cheaper bills, lower emissions, and long-term energy security.
