Solar Energy UK welcomes the opportunity to respond to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s consultation on “Clean heat market mechanism”. We do not intend to respond to the specific questions in the consultation, but nevertheless would like to provide our overall position on this subject to be considered.
Our response will show that whilst heat pumps are an effective way to decarbonise heating, they must be powered by low-carbon sources of electricity, such as solar, to maximise their contribution to net-zero and lower consumer bills.
Solar Energy UK is supportive of the Government’s initiative to drive the deployment of heat pumps, but the scope of the scheme should be expanded to also incentivise onsite power generation as a complimentary measure. We develop this in our overall response below.
