Trade association Solar Energy UK has applauded Ed Miliband’s decision to approve the UK’s largest planned solar farm.
The decision was announced yesterday, the day after a new solar generation record of 14.4 gigawatts was set.[1]
With a capacity of 800 megawatts, the Springwell project in North Kesteven, Lincolnshire, will provide enough clean and secure electricity to power over 180,000 homes. That’s half the houses in the entire county.
The project is backed by EDF Power Solutions UK and Luminous Energy. Once built, they will be providing £320,000 a year towards a community benefit fund. The project will also include 12km of new paths, 15km of hedgerows and a community growing area.
“Projects such as Springwell are vital for our nation’s energy security. Its approval could not be more timely, coming only the day after the potential of solar energy was demonstrated so well by new a generation record and so soon after the UK’s vulnerability to high gas prices was illustrated yet again,” said Chris Hewett, Chief Executive of Solar Energy UK.
The UK’s largest operational solar farm is Cleve Hill in Kent, with a capacity of 373MW.
