Record-breaking rooftop solar project welcomed by Solar Energy UK

The UK’s largest roof-mounted solar energy installation will be conducted at the Port of Liverpool, energy company E.ON announced today.[1]

The project for Peel Ports Group will install up to 31 megawatts of solar generation capacity, distributed across 26 buildings. Solar Energy UK members EMTECFES and Absolute Solar have been appointed as contractors.

“Running to about five times larger than the UK’s biggest installation at present, the Port of Liverpool project is a huge step up for the commercial rooftop solar industry. I warmly congratulate our members for participating in it,” said Chris Hewett, Chief Executive of Solar Energy UK.

“The sad thing is that so many businesses around the country want to do the same but have been stymied by the inadequate capacity of the local electricity grid. This is acting as a serious drag on the economy. Operators must prioritise investment in strengthening their networks, so that more projects like this can go ahead,” he added.

Completed in 2020, the largest rooftop solar installation in the country is currently Custom Solar’s project at Associated British Ports’ Port of Hull, which comes to 6.5MW.
