Designed for use by developers, planners, contractors, archaeological advisors and consultants, across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, this guide on archaeology and solar farms sets out good practice to promote consistent approaches to the process and timing of archaeological work on large-scale solar farms.
The guide has been jointly written and reviewed by representatives from the Association of Local Government Archaeological Officers (ALGAO); Cadw; the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists; Federation of Archaeological Managers and Employers; Historic England; Historic Environment Division, Department for Communities; the Local Government Association; and Solar Energy UK.
The signatory organisations also wish to acknowledge the significant contributions that have been made by representatives of the following organisations via the Steering Group and Drafting Group: AtkinsRealis, Heneb, Gloucestershire County Council, Landgage Heritage, Low Carbon, Statkraft, and Wessex Archaeology. We also wish to thank all the attendees of the workshop held in March 2025 who helped to shape the approach to this Good Practice Guide.
